Food security: Vegetable farming improves living standards in Nepal

How training and hard work allow farmers to boost their families’ and community’s futures

2008 Available in English

This short case study focuses on two farmers in Dharapani, Nepal.

A regular participant of training on vegetable farming organised by Tearfund partner Share and Care, Ram Krishna Gurung has been able to grow enough produce to feed his family and sell locally to pay for his children’s education.

Harka Bahadur Gurung, 64, was the first ever successful farmer in his area, earning him the title ‘Tarkari Baje’, or ‘Vegetable Grandpa’. Despite his old age, he still farms vegetables, setting an example, to his community and proving that with courage and hard work, any profession can flourish.
