The aim of this guide is to raise awareness of:
- the extent of post-harvest losses due to pests and diseases
- the benefits of maintaining genetic variability and traditional crop varieties
- grain banks
- new concepts of food preservation and storage
Anticipated outcomes
- local groups encouraged to try out a variety of ideas to improve grain storage
- groups encouraged to discuss introducing the idea of grain banks to improve food security, either at local or community level
- family diet and overall nutrition to be improved - the use of new techniques in preserving fruit and vegetables to be encouraged and implemented
- the use of new food processing techniques such as making jams, chutneys and juices to be introduced
