International Volunteer Day is on 5 December. We believe in the value of volunteering, whether as individuals, with our families or in church groups, because it helps us to understand the part we all play in God's great story of redemption.
As parents we are all concerned with how we help our children understand the world. For us this has always involved trying to make connections with people who have very different lives to us. We want our daughter to understand that there are people with very tough lives, to appreciate her blessings and to grow in empathy. We want her to understand her faith in terms of following Christ with the last, the least and the lost. One of the ways we try to do this is by forming relationships with those who are different from us. We try to do this at home in the UK but have also chosen to connect internationally wherever possible. We have just been in India doing some of this, spending time with families that live on the pavement and in slums. It is always challenging and eye opening. Earlier this year we spent time in South Africa with long-term friends. It was fabulous. This little film was made by the team at Tearfund to encourage other families to do the same.
