It is difficult to change habits, especially when the new habits feel inconvenient. That is why hygiene and sanitation work does not simply focus on technical solutions, important as they are.

This edition of Footsteps focuses on what people really want from sanitation, and how community facilitators can help people take the initiative to change their habits and improve their own sanitation and hygiene. It considers why sanitation programmes often fail and shares advice for how to overcome challenges in community-led total sanitation projects.

It includes instructions for how to make soap, and information about hand washing that can easily be shared with groups as a starting point for discussion.
