Footsteps 111 - Local fundraising

Discovering the joy of inviting people to invest in our work and ministries

Editor's note

Jude Collins

I used to think it must be difficult to ‘persuade’ people to give money to support projects and programmes. However, my thoughts began to change as I heard story after story of how rewarding it can be to meet with people who want to make a difference through their giving.

I then had the chance to experience this for myself. After a trip to Haiti I visited a group of people interested to know more about the work I had seen. Because I had met people in Haiti and heard their stories, it was easy to talk with the group and a delight when some of them decided they would like to provide some funding. I left the meeting feeling encouraged and challenged by the generosity of the group. I realised that it is a joy and a privilege to invite people to join us in the work we are doing.

There are many different ways to raise funds including local initiatives, business development and government partnerships. In all of these, good communication is key. This may include the use of photos, videos and accountability and transparency are essential.

Paul explained to the Corinthians that what we give should come from the heart and be given willingly and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7). If we all give generously of the money, time and gifts that God has given us, we will be able to make the world a better place.
