Advocacy in Tanzania: Dignifying burials during Covid-19

Tearfund partner, CCT, empowers church leaders to lobby for dignity during Covid-19 burials

2020 Available in English

In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, some of the people who died from the disease were buried at night by government officials. This caused a lot of distress in the affected communities.

Church leaders across Tanzania joined together to send an appeal for dignity to the media, each member church and the Ministry of Health. As a result, the President of Tanzania denounced on national television the practice of night burials, promoted additional health precautions during funerals and asked for input from the church into the national Covid-19 response.
