27 February - 3 March 2017
in collaboration with Council of Services and Development, Synod of the Nile.
Between 27 February and 3 March 2017, Tearfund, in collaboration with Micah Network, Call2All Network and YWAM, hosted a Compassion and Justice Gathering in Egypt. The Council of Services and Development, Egypt was also involved in the organisation of Egypt Gathering.
What are Compassion and Justice Gatherings?
Compassion and justice gatherings aim to inspire and equip people of all backgrounds and nationalities for compassion ministry. We long to see the church and individual Christians and organisations helping whole communities to realise their God-given potential.
You can find out more about the previous Mumbai, Durban and Uganda compassion and justice gatherings by visiting the video resource page on TILZ.
Vision for Egypt Gathering
We wanted to inspire and equip the church to actively respond to its calling to address poverty and injustice, in a way that meets the holistic needs of individuals and communities. We sought to create a space where participants could share learning and best-practice examples of compassion ministry. We also wanted to facilitate the creation of connections that enable participants to offer ongoing support to each other after the gathering had ended.
We hoped that participants would leave the gathering inspired and supported to be salt and light in their communities.
What did the programme cover?
In the gathering we explored what it means for the church to seek the Kingdom of God, focusing on the flourishing life and salam that we are promised in Christ. We looked at the role of the church in modeling and growing the kingdom, the life of discipleship that contributes to this, how we can share this vision with churches, and what salam looks like in our communities.
Topics discussed included:
- How do holistic ministries help people and communities to flourish?
- The role of the church in addressing gender inequality
- Forgiveness and reconciliation
- Diversity and social inclusion
- The refugee crisis
- The role of young people in development
Participants had an opportunity to visit and engage with the work being done by Church or Christian NGO ministries in Egypt’s. This enabled participants to observe proven models for action, and take away some core principles, ideas and lessons that they can apply in their own contexts.
