Transforming the commitment into action

A paper assessing the EU's progress in developing a clear disaster prevention strategy

2006 Available in English

The EU made a clear statement at the UN General Assembly in 2005 that 'we must do more to reduce the burden of disasters on the poor and most vulnerable.’ Disaster risk reduction (DRR) and mitigation tactics are central to reducing this burden. As the world’s largest donor of development aid and one of the main donors of humanitarian assistance, it is crucial that the EU has a clear strategy for integrating disaster risk reduction into its relief and development policy and practice.

This paper was commissioned in November 2005 by Tearfund to assess the EU's progress with developing a robust DRR integration strategy.
