Welcome to the Disasters essentials programme. It is made up of eight short courses that together will help you learn how to support a local church and its community, to prepare for and respond to a disaster, and understand the importance of wellbeing.

There is a strong link between poverty and increased vulnerability to disasters, often due to power imbalances and structures within society that exclude certain groups or individuals. However, we believe the local church is ideally situated within its local community to be actively engaged in inspiring and motivating the community to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters, and this programme will show you how.

Each short course will take around 20 minutes to complete, and the whole programme will take between two and three hours to complete. On completion of each short course you will receive a certificate, and on completion of all eight courses you will receive a ‘Disasters essentials’ certificate. We recommend you go through the eight short courses in order.

If you would prefer to go deeper into supporting communities to prepare for, respond to, and reduce the impact of future disasters, then see the more in-depth course: Disasters and the local church.
